Debate and Forensics Camp

Debate, Forensics... Huh?

Debate and Forensics camp will teach the fundamentals of public speaking and argumentation, enabling kids to develop core presentation and debating skills that boost confidence and self-esteem.  Our camp offers children the chance to improve their communication skills in a challenging, safe and secure environment that’s suited to each child’s age and experience level.

During the first three days, campers engage in different debate and forensics activities including: congressional debate, abbreviated policy debate, and improvised duet acting.  On the fourth day, participants focus on one of the activities and practice in preparation for a tournament on the final day of camp.

Our objective is to enable every camper to develop confidence through low-stress speech making and fun performances.  For instance, former debate topics include: school uniforms, maximum allowable homework, adolescent cell phone use.  Some of our favorite improvised duet acting topics include: "Help!  A Disney Soundtrack Took Over My Life," or, "A Big Black Bear and a Big Black Bug... A Friendship in the Making."  Campers debate in a student congress or abbreviated debate format, which ensures that each participant can make meaningful speeches.  Improvised duet acting allows thirty minutes of preparation for a three-five minute scene, based on the topic.

Parents are encouraged to "drop in," or stay, and watch their campers compete during the tournament on the final day.  All campers receive individual awards based on their performance during the week.

All campers will also receive a camp t-shirt and a delicious, healthy snack each day through a collaboration with the Fayetteville Public School Child Nutrition Department.
